WHY VOLUNTEER? People choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons. For some it offers the chance to give something back to the community or make a difference to the people around them. For others it provides an opportunity to develop new skills or build on existing experience and knowledge. Regardless of the motivation, what unites them all is that they find it both challenging and rewarding. DID YOU KNOW THERE ARE CAREERS IN PHILANTHROPY? Information for Student Volunteer What is the Reading Buddies Program? The reading buddies program was created to ignite the love and interest of reading to struggling readers and to encourage and celebrate their efforts. How does it work? Big Buddy meets once a week for 45 minutes with Little Buddy on Zoom. The program is one on one between Big Buddy and Little Buddy. Big Buddy will be Little Buddy’s mentor, and Little Buddy will be inspired by Big Buddy. This program should be enjoyed by Big Buddy as well as Little Buddy. This is a self-led program where it is Big Buddy’s responsibility to communicate with Little Buddy’s family. Arrangements for absences, etc are between them. We will be communicating with Little Buddy’s family to track Big Buddy’s volunteer hours. What happens during the program? It does not have to be just reading for 45 minutes. We do not want Little Buddy to get frustrated or bored. We want Big Buddy and Little Buddy to enjoy their time together and for Little Buddy to build up confidence in their reading and comprehension. The session can start with small talks to find out Little Buddy’s interests, strengths and weaknesses. What are the qualifications required to volunteer? • Attend Grade 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 • Recommendation from a teacher • Enjoy being with children • Patient, responsible, punctual and committed How can I apply?
